PANTS | HELIKON-TEX WOMEN'S DENIM URBAN TACTICAL PANTS

Hey guys!

Welcome back to the blog! Today I have another review for my ladysofters out there - a review on the Helikon-Tex UTP (Urban Tactical Pants). My friends over at Helikon sent these over for a 24-hour event in September, unfortunately, they didn’t arrive in time for the event, but I did manage to wear these to a game JUST before the second lockdown in England.

The Women’s Urban Tactical Pants are a pair of anatomically shaped women’s trousers that maintain the look of a civilian pant but retain the full functionality of a combat pant. They have a classic jeans ‘neck’ shape that prevents them riding down and employ the classical cut for blue jeans. They are laden with pockets so that equipment can be stored close to the users centre mass (hips and waist). The front and rear pocket edges are all reinforced to make sure you can carry knives, multitools and torches without compromising the fabric. There are two velcro-closed front pockets are large enough to carry a smartphone (I fit my iPhone 11 Pro Max in easily). These pockets can also fit in an AK/AR magazine with ease. The zippered thigh pockets look flat but these deceiving pouches are extendable by design allowing pouches or wallets to be carried with ease.

For airsoft I usually prefer integrated knee pads - just so I can kneel on the ground without the fear of kneeling on a BB *shudders*. The Women’s UTP don’t have integrated kneepads but they can take the low profile insert knee pads which are purchased separately. I haven’t tried the low profile inserts yet but it is on my list of things to do. The fabric on the denim pair of trousers is very thick so kneeling on the ground isn’t the end of the world, but being careful not to kneel on BBs or rocks goes without saying.

They are sized in waist sizes from a 28-32” - as these are a women’s fit it is really important to check the size chart before ordering. I am a UK size 10 in trousers and I chose a 31/32 as I have 29” waist and I wanted a bit more freedom around my midsection. Upon trying them on, they fit well around the thigh area (fitted but not too tight), well around the buttocks and the midriff area isn’t too tight when I bend down or do a squat but it is secure enough to not ride down. The slightly elasticated waist is a nice touch (as it gives you that extra give). The length of the pant I chose - 32” is a great length for me personally as I’m only 5”3 if you’re a tall lassie, the 34” would be a lot better suited to you. The pant leg sits nicely on my combat boots and doesn’t look bunched up.

In terms of quality, the material is fantastic - it’s thick and feels durable. My only complaint in regards to the material is that it can be quite stiff after they’ve been dried so they aren’t super easy to fold. As they’re heavy denim they do take quite a while to dry as well. The stitching is neat and tidy. The fly has a YKK zip so it isn’t a flimsy one.

In regards to their performance, they’re comfortable to wear in the field and don’t restrict movement. The pockets enable a lot of small items to be carried on your person - the ability to carry extra mags/empty mags in the pockets is also super handy. They aren’t waterproof so when you kneel in a wet spot or play in rain they do take a while to dry as I said - so I wouldn’t wear these for a wet game day.

The Denim UTP from Helikon retail for €75.90 - which is around £67 (do check the current exchange rate before ordering). As well as denim, they also come in black, khaki (which is more of a beige), Olive Drab and Shadow Grey - these colourways are slightly cheaper at €69.90. They’re not too expensive but not the cheapest either - right in the middle. I think the price is justified as they’re a specific women’s cut and are made from high-quality fabric.

LOADOUT | GREENZONE!

Hey everyone!

Welcome back to the blog! Today I have another loadout post for you and in this post we'll be looking at my Greenzone loadout that I wore for Warzone 6 in 2018 on the Greek island of Crete.

As I was playing the on the UN Team, I wore a UN Blue beret for the weekend so I was easily recognisable to the other teams.

The glasses I'm wearing for this loadout (and the ones I wear for most of my loadouts) are the Wiley X Saber Advanced. They're made from Shatterproof Selenite Polycarbonate lenses that meet the MIL-PRF-32432(GL) ballistic standards: ANSI Z87.1-2010 high velocity and high mass impact standards. I opted for the set with amber, vermillion and tinted lenses but I usually wear the vermillion lenses. They feature a T-Shell Lens coating that prevents scratches. They also offer 100% UVA/UVB protection with distortion-free clarity. I've been using these for around 3 years and they've never let me down. On the Wiley X EMEA website, you can get money off by using the code 'AFAIRSOFT' (affiliate code).

The team over at Military 1st kindly sent over a care package of Pencott Greenzone goodies for my trip to Crete which included a Helikon cap, the Wisport Sparrow 2.0 Pack, the Helikon CPU Shirt and the Helikon CPU Trousers, all in Pencott Greenzone.

First, let’s look at the CPU shirt! The Helikon CPU shirt is a heavy-duty combat shirt made from NyCo (Nylon and Cotton blend) Ripstop that has a two-way front zipper, a pleated back with a slit to enhance the range of movements, 6 pockets for optimum storage, elbow patch reinforcements on each arm for durability and Velcro plates for attachment of patches.

It is a piece of utilitarian clothing that combines functionality with comfort, as it features a mandarin collar with Velcro closure - there is a soft fleece on the inside of the collar which makes it super comfortable to wear, it has a zipped front with Velcro flap closure that makes it easy to put on/take off. As for pockets it has two on the chest with Velcro top closure and zipped side entry, an upper arm pocket on each sleeve with Velcro flap and zipped side entry, it also has two forearm pockets of various sizes on each sleeve with Velcro closures. And my favourite aspect of the shirt? The underarm zippers for ventilation., although these had to go in the alteration.

Next up we have the Helikon CPU Trousers in Pencott Greenzone:

These are a pair of heavy wearing and comfortable Combat Patrol Uniform (CPU) cargo trousers that are also made from NyCo Ripstop that feature 10 pockets and a double layer on the knees and on the backside (yay for butt protection!)

They have a button fastening and fly - for quick and easy fixes on the field should the button fail, durable belt loops to hold those weighty shooters belts, side waist adjusters to personalise the fit and drawstring bottoms on the legs too. As for pockets, the CPU trousers are laden with them including two large front pockets, two small open pockets at the front, two cargo pockets with a Velcro closure, two rear pockets with button flaps and one lower side pocket with Velcro flap on each leg.

What’s the quality like? The fabric is thick, has a nice weight to it and feels sturdy and durable. The features such as the fleece-lined collar and double-layered knees and backside reinforce this!

So how do they both fit? Well, here’s the thing – they didn’t. Even though I was sent the smallest size that was in stock in both products (small in the shirt and 32L in the trousers), it’s clear from the before photos that the uniform drowned my tiny frame – now these would more than likely fit a dude but I’d say for women and younger players they’d probably be a bit of a miss. My wonderful friend Jo at www.purplepongo.com helped me tailor mine just before I flew out, and you can read all about the process and see the finished images here! Once these items were tailored, they were perfect.

How much do they retail for? Both the shirt and trousers are available from Military 1st for £62.40 each. Overall, I love the features and quality. The only thing I was disappointed with is the fit.

My chest rig of choice for War Zone 6 – the Hurricane Hybrid Chest Rig from Direct Action in Pencott Greenzone!

It is a low profile, adjustable rig made from laser-cut laminated, 500D Cordura so you know it’s built to endure tough environments! The softshell interior construction also makes it a comfortable rig to wear for extended periods. The harness is well constructed and feels sturdy even when the rig is loaded up. It has a reinforced drag handle which is more applicable to real-world scenarios rather than airsoft but it’s a handy feature.

Not only is it comfortable and well-constructed in general but it is also full to brim with essential pouches including integrated, adjustable mag pouches with paracord retention that adjust to fit: eight (!) AR mags, four AK mags or even four SR magazines. It also includes several fixed external pouches for other mission essentials: two adjustable pouches, a sealed zipper pouch and a Velcro flap pouch for when you need to access items quickly.

What I like about the Hurricane is that you aren’t just limited to the pouches on the chest rig! As it not only features the integrated and fixed pouches but 9 PALS slots on the sides of the rig which are perfect for radio, medical, utility pockets and horizontal PALS slots under the ammo pouches for items such as tourniquets, pistol mag pouches and 40mm pouches etc. If you choose to run comms, the fixed pouches are a great size for a Baofeng radio and the rig has comms/antenna routing to keep everything tidy and prevent wires getting caught.

Is it easy to adjust to fit? The harness is completely adjustable via the buckles and to keep the excess material tidy it has Velcro wraparound straps – bonus! It has a split front, zipper design as well so you don’t need to adjust it every time you remove it which is handy. After adjusting, I found it fit well and was comfortable to wear even when loaded up with mags and radios. My only gripe was that the laser cut material was quite rough and did rub my inner arms when I was only wearing a t-shirt because of the hot weather. I didn’t have this issue wearing my combat shirt and I suspect it was because it was brand new, out of the packet. I would expect the material to soften over time and this to subside.

The Hurricane comes in a fair few different camouflage options including Adaptive Green, Black, Coyote Brown, Crye MultiCam, Pencott Badlands, Pencott Greenzone and Urban Grey so there is a camo option for. How much does it retail for? €239 which is around £210 at the current exchange rate so it is pretty pricey but the quality warrants the price in my opinion.

My airsoft rifle of choice for Warzone 6 – the AKS-74UN Tactical Mod A from E&L kindly supplied to me by Nuprol! For our loadouts, myself and Bill (my fellow Airsoft Action writer) chose to run tactical AK’s and I needed something compact and had plenty of rail space, and this is where the E&L AKS-74UN Tac Mod came in!

First, let’s talk about the aesthetics, it is a classic AK style that has the tactical goodness of a rail system for accessories. The construction is mostly steel with some reinforced polymer components. I like the aesthetics of the AKS74UN Tac Mod as it combines the classic look of the AK and the utilitarian rail systems of the M4 platform there’s only one thing I would change – it comes with a collapsible skeleton stock which I found to be a little uncomfortable when shouldering the weapon, I think it would look even better with a carbine stock!

Other useful info? As it’s constructed of mostly steel it weighs in at just over 3kg, which is pretty heavy compared to the polymer AEGs I would usually use. The weight is comfortable to carry, but during extended games, I would recommend a sling to prevent your arms from becoming too tired. It has semi and full auto firing modes with the Russian markings (pretty cool). The battery is easy to install – just pop the button near the stock, flip up the compartment and install – stick lipo batteries fit well in this compartment.

FPS and performance? When we got to Warzone 6 I excitedly grabbed my new AK out of the box and headed to the Chrono line – looking at the documents inside the case, it should have been shooting around 330FPS with a +/- 5% (which is around 346 FPS) but when it came time to Chrono, mine was sitting at a steady 353 FPS - 3 FPS over the site limit (and a big difference in what the documents said). As it was a brand new gun I figured the spring just needed to be worn in a little, so I decided to put a couple of mags through and sure enough, the FPS dropped down to around 348 FPS. I expect with time that the FPS will continue to fall as the spring gets worn in.

How does it shoot? I was impressed with its performance! It had pinpoint accuracy once the hop-up was adjusted (which was easy to adjust by the way), groupings were good and overall it was very pleasant to use. I did bring a Vortex SPARC AR to accessorise my AKS-74UN with but didn’t have the right mount for the job but this wasn’t an issue as it was easy to use just by sight.

Let’s talk about internals! It has a CNC’d steel outer barrel, 6 x 9mm steel gear bush bearing, a CNC’s steel gear set, silver wiring, Air Seal nozzle, a one-piece CNC’d steel cylinder, the spring guide is a silver latch with a Rotary Washer, and It has a high torque motor. The internals are of high quality and I feel this is reflected in the performance of the AEG.
Overall, I enjoyed using the AKS-74UN Tac Mod A at Warzone. I’m looking forward to customising it with some badass attachments and a new stock when it finally arrives back in the UK. I think it makes a great tactical AK addition to the armoury.

The E&L AKS74UN is available from a few UK retailers and is on average between £400-£420.

IWA 2017 SHOW REPORT: LADIES TACTICAL CLOTHING!

Hey everyone!

One thing I was really excited for at IWA 2017 was checking out the companies that offer tactical clothing for women. With women being the biggest growing demographic in shooting sports more and more companies are recognising the need for female specific gear which is great to see. In this post I take a look at the range of ladies wear from brands such as Pentagon, Helikon Tex and 5.11!

So first on our list is Pentagon Tactical. Pentagon are an affordable brand that offer a substantial range of high quality tactical clothing. Although their current range is unisex, there are a few items that I have found from my own trial and error whilst building loadouts that really work for me - the Pentagon Artaxes Soft Shell which are in a lot of my CQB pics and the Pentagon BDU 2.0 Pants (you can view my review of the BDU 2.0 trousers here) - now I have the ranger green pants for my civvi loadout looks and wear a 34" waist which is the smallest they do, despite the unisex cut they aren't too baggy or loose but still give me a fair bit of movement making them super comfy to wear for Airsoft.

Whilst at IWA 2017 I spoke to one of the Pentagon team about if there were any plans in the future for a women's line and I'm super happy to report that they will be rolling out a women's line in the summer of 2017! At the show they had their first piece of women's clothing on display and it was the ladies T-shirt which had a really cool Spartan head print with 'A-FEMALE' in a black/pink colourway. Although it doesn't seem like much, I think it's a great step in the right direction and I'm super looking forward to the rest of their women's line!

Net up is Helikon Tex. Helikon have been slowly rolling out a women's line which is constantly expanding. I have already tried the Women's UTP (Urban Tactical Pants) and Classic Army T-Shirts - the review for them can be found here and I was really impressed with them and it turns out they have a tonne of new products for women hitting the market this year.

A lot of the new items Helikon Tex are bringing out for women were not at IWA because they haven't been released yet so unfortunately I didn't get any images in person but I've imported a few snippets from their 2017 catalogue so you guys can see just what they're coming out with. We'll be reviewing these items as soon as they're available.

The Women's Cumulus Heavy Fleece  is an outdoor fleece jacket that has been designed to fit the curves of the female form - no more baggy fleeces! Yay!
The Urban Tactical Skirt is something we did get to see at IWA, however I feel that this product would be better suited to a range day than an actual Airsoft game (can you imagine your knees?!) but I think this gives female shooters more of a variety of what they wear on the range. It has loads of pocket space and the material feels super durable.

Last up from Helikon is the Women's UTL Polo Shirt, it's made to fit the contours of women's bodies, gives the shooter plenty of room to manoeuvre and is made from a quick wicking fabric. I am really looking forward to testing the Polo Shirt as it looks like it would be great to wear on a hot Airsoft game day!

Lastly, we have 5.11! 5.11 Tactical are a very well known brand that have a huge line of clothing for women. With their women's line they don't do much in camo and this is because they are moving away from clothing with a Military feel and in a direction of a fashion brand with all the functionality that a female shooter would need, like pockets that fit AR15/M4 magazines. I spent some time with 5.11 going through the clothing they offer for women.

Raven Capri Range Pant

So the Raven Capri and Raven Range Pant is made of an antimicrobial, moisture wicking double layer stretch fabric which makes it super comfortable to wear and gives the shooter plenty of room to move. It has wide belt loops and abrasion panels for belt/holster wear. Although it may be more suited to wear on the range rather than an Airsoft site, I think these would be a super comfortable pair of trousers to wear.

Raven Range Pant

Wyldcat Pant

The Wyldcat pant is made from a stretch fabric with a sateen finish that is available in black, khaki, blush and grenade, it has low profile magazine pockets on the back, and with double knee construction and zippered leg gussets (so the shooter can wear the trousers tucked in or over boots) these are a great pair of practical trousers that have a slim fit and are available in colours suitable for loadouts.

Ladies Stryke Pant

The last product in our ladies tactical clothing post is the Ladies Stryke Pant! I have a pair of these in black which I wear for my Police MilSim loadout, they are a super comfy pair of trousers that have loads of pocket space, discreet knee pad pockets and is made from a 2-way Flex Tac Mechanical stretch fabric that features a Teflon finish for stain and soil resistance and it also features rip stop making these a practical pair of trousers for Airsoft or everyday wear. These also come in a range of tactical colours!

5.11 have loads more in their Women's range including the Cirrus Pant, the Rapid Half Zip, the Glacier Half Zip, a great selection of shirts, the Athena belt and the Kella belt.

I'm really looking forward to seeing these products hit the market and to get my hands on them to test and review!

HELIKON TEX WOMEN'S URBAN TACTICAL PANTS AND TEE REVIEW!

Hey everyone! So my friends over at Military 1st were kind enough to send me a couple of products from the fitted ladies tactical clothing line from Helikon Tex. After seeing the ladies line at IWA 2016 I was keen to see how these products performed as we all know, there isn't a great deal of tactical clothing out there for women.

So the products in my care package were the Ladies Urban Tactical Pants in Shadow, the women's Helikon Chameleon Skeleton T shirt, and the women's T Shirt in Coyote.

First things first, with these trousers it is really important to measure your body and check the sizing, In mens/unisex combat trousers I usually wear a 28" waist, 32" leg and they do the trick but as these are an extremely fitted pair of trousers I had to measure my waist and hips to make sure I had the correct size. I'm a size 8/10 in most jeans/trousers etc and worked out my size to be a 30" waist. When the package arrived at my house (very speedy delivery) I opened it up excitedly and immediately started inspecting the stitch quality and materials - not many of you will know this but I have a degree with honours in Fashion and Textiles so build quality and materials of garments is one of the key things I look out for in any clothing I wear.

I was very impressed with the feel of the material, it doesn't feel or look cheap - has a little stretch to it and is a durable 2 way rip stop blend fabric - perfect for the field. Looking at the overall construction of the garment it was solid and with this I threw them on so let's check out the fit. So these are designed specifically to fit the anatomy of the female form and have a classic jean neck shape to prevent the trousers from slipping down. I am very happy with the fit, they are comfy and not too restrictive. After putting these through their paces off the field with squats, running during my daily fitness routine for most activities, especially for range days the size is perfect however if I were to wear these for an Airsoft game I would probably opt for a size bigger because I like my trousers to be a little looser to enable a better range of movement especially when I'm crawling under/climbing over or through obstacles to get those kills on the field. The trousers are very fitted around the waist, hips, buttocks and thigh areas and loosen up around the knees. The length of the trousers is 34" no matter what size you opt for and this is to give the user greater freedom in choosing their leg length - just fold them up and you're good to go. I for one quite like the long leg.

They feature a elasticated waist and zip/velcro fastening which gives them a little movement around the waist and keeps them securely fastened. There are 7 wide belt loops which are perfect for loadout belts for holsters, mags etc. I feel pretty confident when I say that it is unlikely that you would need a belt to keep them up. They also come equipped with 12 pockets - two front pockets with strengthened edges, two wide back pockets, two slim back pockets for accessories, two angled internal waistband pockets, two zipped thigh cargo pockets and two velcro thigh pockets.
Although I think the amount of pockets is exceptionally useful and they do enhance the overall aesthetics of the trousers, I only really used the zipped/velcro and the waistband pockets. I liked the security of the fastened pockets and my iPhone fitted well in the waistband pockets.

They come in 4 colours - shadow, black, khaki and olive drab, I opted for the shadow grey colour as I'm really loving that shade at the minute. It is somewhere in between the Mechanix Wolf Grey and Viper Titanium, a nice, dark grey/blue colour that goes perfect with a black loadout.

Lastly, let's talk prices. From Military 1st the shadow colourway is £53.00 with free shipping which is a little more pricey than the unisex trouser options but cheaper than other brands who also offer ladies cuts such as 5.11 Tactical. For the quality of the construction, material and fit, I feel the price is justified. Overall, I found it very hard to dislike anything about these trousers.

Next on the list is the Helikon Chameleon Skeleton T Shirt in black, this part will be short and sweet. I chose a size small which is the size I usually wear in tops and as you can see from the photo, it fits very well. I especially like how long line the shirt is, reaching the top of the pockets. The design is pretty cool and I have worn it out casually not just on the field. The material is soft and comfy and at a price of £10.50, is there really anything to dislike? Not in my books!

It is great to see companies recognising the growth in numbers of women in shooting sports and catering for us so Helikon Tex get a thumbs up from me and thank you to Military 1st for the opportunity to test out this great line of gear.
